AUSANGATE 2007 (7D-6N)
Itinerary:Day 1: Cusco – Tinki
Departure
from Cusco: 9:00am
Along the way, we’ll pass through the pre-Inca village of Pikillacta and the
colonial villages of Andahuaylillas and Huaro. This is followed by lunch, and
later, making camp in Tinki.
Day 2: Tinki – Upis
After breakfast, we’ll begin our trek, crossing the Ocongate River to arrive
at the foot of the snow-capped Ausangate. There we’ll enjoy a spectacular
panorama of snow-covered mountain followed by lunch. That evening we’ll camp
beside the thermal springs in Upis.
Day 3: Upis – Pucacocha
After an energy-packed breakfast, we’ll begin our ascent to 4,500m.a.s.l.
Along the way, we’ll appreciate the beauty of Lake Pucacocha (Red Lake), as well
as that of the ice cataracts located nearby our evening campsite.
Day 4: Pucacocha – Ausangate Lagoon - Chilcapinaya
After breakfast, we’ll pass by several turquoise lakes, and then ascend to
Plomani Mountain Pass at 4,800m.a.s.l. where the views of the Vilcanota mountain
range and Ausangate’s southeastern face are quite impressive. After lunch, we’ll
descend to Chilcapinaya, where we’ll enjoy dinner at our campsite.
Day 5: Chilcapinaya – Pachaspata or Queromarca
After
breakfast, we’ll ascend to the Jampa Valley, and have an opportunity to observe
Andean shepherds watching over their sheep and alpacas while threading wool.
Later on, we’ll have lunch, and continue walking along Lake Ticllacocha. Further
along, we’ll cross the last mountain pass at 4,650m.a.s.l. finally arriving at a
small meadow in Pachaspata. If the weather allows, we’ll make camp and enjoy
dinner by Lake Qomercocha.
Day 6: Pachaspata or Qomercocha – Pacchanta
After breakfast, we’ll descend to the valley, observing changes in the
temperature and surrounding landscape along the way. We’ll have lunch upon our
arrival at the village of Pacchanta, where we’ll enjoy some rest, as well as a
well-deserved bath in the thermal waters at our camp site.
Day 7: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco
As this will be the last day, we’ll conclude our trek with breakfast
followed by a short walk, passing by a number of small communities along the way.
We’ll have lunch on the trail, and then take our bus back to Cusco, where we’ll
arrive in the early afternoon.
